Dr. Tarek Hatoum

Dr. Tarek Hatoum, a distinguished cardiologist and electrophysiologist, was born in Zahle, Lebanon, the Okanagan Valley of the Levant. His academic journey began at the Secondary Evangelical School, followed by enrolment at the prestigious American University of Beirut (AUB) in 1995, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He continued his education at AUB, completing his medical degree and subsequently his internal medicine residency at the American University Medical Center. During his final year of residency, he served as Chief Medical Resident, demonstrating leadership and clinical excellence.

Dr. Hatoum pursued specialized training in Adult Cardiology at AUB, a leading medical institution in the region, where he also served as Chief Fellow in his final year. During his fellowship, he achieved a significant milestone by earning the National Board of Echocardiography certification in comprehensive adult echocardiography from the United States in 2009.

In 2011, Dr. Hatoum relocated to Alberta, Canada, to further hone his expertise in cardiac electrophysiology at the University of Calgary. There, he developed advanced skills in heart rhythm management, including catheter ablation and cardiac device implantation. In 2014, he moved to Saudi Arabia, where he practiced for five years as a consultant cardiologist and electrophysiologist in both private and university hospitals. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, he led the Division of Cardiology and chaired critical committees, including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Patient Safety, and Pharmacy. Dr. Hatoum also contributed to medical education as a university instructor and a speaker at national and regional cardiology conferences.

Returning to Alberta in 2020, Dr. Hatoum joined the Syncope and Autonomic Lab at the University of Calgary as a Research Associate, collaborating with globally renowned experts Dr. Robert Sheldon and Dr. Satish Raj. He further solidified his expertise by completing a clinical fellowship in syncope and autonomic disorders at the same institution.

Since 2022, Dr. Hatoum has served as a full-time staff cardiologist at the Healthy Heart Institute and Red Deer Regional Hospital, providing comprehensive cardiovascular care to the Red Deer and Central Alberta communities. His practice focuses on cardiac rhythm management, heart failure, and syncope, delivering exceptional patient-centered care informed by his extensive training and global experience.
